Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a seminar titled "Outbreak Alert: Protecting Our Community from Measles" to address the ongoing measles outbreak through expert discussion on prevention and early detection.
The Department of Public Health at IUB hosted the event at the DMK Lecture Gallery, drawing health experts, academics and students to examine outbreak response strategies. The seminar addressed critical public health concerns as measles cases continue to emerge across the country.
Prof. Dr. Saif Ullah Munshi, dean of the Faculty of Basic Science and Para Clinical Science at Bangladesh Medical University, highlighted that individuals born after 1990 generally possess vaccination-based immunity, while those with prior measles infection develop natural immunity. Prof. Dr. Tahmina Shirin, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR), and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Tawfique, paediatrics consultant at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital, also addressed attendees. Experts stressed that measles spreads through coughing and sneezing in enclosed spaces and urged parents to ensure two doses of the measles vaccine for children, while noting that pandemic-level spread remains unlikely.
