Based on an official announcement by The Daily Star.

Eastern Bank PLC has honoured environmental activist Shakhawat Ullah, known as Brikkhoshokha, for his significant contributions to nationwide tree plantation and environmental conservation initiatives. Ali Reza Iftekhar, managing director and chief executive officer of Eastern Bank, presented the recognition at a ceremony held at the bank's corporate headquarters in Gulshan on 16 March 2026.

The honour was awarded under Eastern Bank's 'EBL Mission Bangladesh Returns 2025' initiative, which recognised four individuals this year for their societal and environmental contributions. Over the past eight years, Shakhawat Ullah has planted more than 180,000 trees across 35 districts in Bangladesh, supported by a network of over 400 young volunteers. His work extends beyond tree plantation to include protection of endangered tree species, conservation of rare plants, and advocacy for river and bird conservation efforts.

Shakhawat Ullah formally launched his environmental programme in 2018 with the planting of 100 Krishnachura trees, which subsequently expanded into a nationwide movement. Following an accident in 2020 while collecting tree saplings, he intensified his environmental efforts to scale the initiative further.
