DMP Justifies Dispersal of Primary Teachers' Rally at Shahbagh

Dhaka Metropolitan Police dispersed protesting government primary school assistant teachers at Shahbagh after they attempted to march toward Jamuna State Guesthouse.

Based on an official announcement by Dhaka Tribune.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) justified its dispersal of a government primary school assistant teachers' rally at Shahbagh on Saturday, citing security concerns and violation of restrictions around state establishments.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman explained that protesters initially assembled at the Central Shaheed Minar and later gathered in front of Shahbagh Police Station around 3pm to symbolically surrender their pens. The demonstration escalated when a section of protesters broke through police barricades at approximately 4pm and attempted to march toward the Jamuna State Guesthouse.

Police intervened after protesters threw bricks and stones, injuring several officers. Officers deployed sound grenades and water cannons to disperse the crowd. The DMP statement emphasized that gatherings, rallies, and public assemblies remain banned in areas surrounding the Jamuna State Guesthouse. The police action was necessary to maintain order and protect important state establishments, DMP officials said, urging the public to comply with restrictions in designated capital areas.
